Mini Session Tips I Wish I Knew As A Beginner Photographer

When I first started offering mini sessions, I thought they would be the easiest thing ever. Shorter sessions, quick edits, fast cash… right? But the reality hit different. Running minis takes just as much strategy (if not more) than a full session. Looking back now, there are so many things I wish I knew as a beginner photographer. These tips are here to save you from my mistakes and help you make your mini sessions stress-free, profitable, and fun.

1. Always Require Non-Refundable Retainers (and Full Payment Early)

One of the biggest lessons I learned: never hold a mini session spot without a non-refundable retainer. It protects your time and makes clients commit. I also now require full payment at least one month before the session. That way, I’m not stressing about last-minute invoices or no-shows on the day of.

If you’re new to minis and want someone to walk you through how to set your systems up, I offer 1:1 mentorships where we can cover all of this in detail.

2. Structure Your Packages with Upsells in Mind

As a beginner photographer, I used to include way too many images in my minis. Now? I keep my base package small. If they want more, they can pay to upgrade to the full gallery. It’s a simple upsell that not only makes you more profit, but also keeps your editing workload realistic.

And if you want your mini edits to have a signature, scroll-stopping look, check out Jaide & Jett Presets. They’re the exact presets I use to keep my galleries consistent, chic, and professional.

3. Build an Organized Email Workflow

Minis mean multiple clients in a short time frame, which can turn into chaos fast if you’re not organized. Having a solid email workflow in place is a key.

I send:

  • A confirmation email right after booking

  • A reminder email with styling tips and directions

  • A day-of details email

  • A follow-up email with their gallery and upgrade options

If workflows ever feel overwhelming, you’re not alone. That’s exactly why I created the Facebook Group for Photographers, a safe space to connect, share, learn, and ask questions. Inside, you’ll find support from other photographers plus free photography education to help make your journey easier and more fun.

If you ever have questions about my photography guides, this is the perfect place to get extra help, clarity, and real support from people who get it.

4. Don’t Run Minis Alone (Bring an Assistant)

If I could tell beginner-me one thing, it’s this: bring help.

Having someone there to record behind-the-scenes, help grab kids’ attention, fix hair, or check outfits is worth everything. Not only does it make the session run smoother, but you’ll also get bonus content for social media that helps you book future minis.

Speaking of content, I’d love to invite you to join The Circle for Photographers on Instagram. Inside, you'll find updates, announcements, surprises, and giveaways just for you.

Ready to Level Up Your Mini Sessions?

Mini sessions don’t have to feel overwhelming. With the right setup, they can be fun, profitable, and a signature part of your photography business. These are the exact lessons I wish someone had told me when I was just starting out, and now they’re here for you.

If you’re a beginner photographer craving more education and support, I’ve got you. You can dive deeper with my 1:1 mentorships, give your edits that polished look with Jaide & Jett Presets, and connect with other creatives inside our Facebook Group for Photographers.
