If you’ve ever found yourself obsessed with that soft, nostalgic feel of film photos, you’re definitely not alone. There’s just something so special about the texture and imperfect beauty of film grain. It makes your photos feel real and alive, like little time capsules.

But here’s the thing: you don’t actually need to go out and buy rolls of film or dust off your old film camera to get that look. You can totally create a dreamy film vibe right in Lightroom, and it’s way easier than you might think.

I’m going to walk you through exactly how to add film grain in Lightroom and how to really dial it in so it feels authentic and not cheesy. Let’s make your photos look like they just stepped out of an old photo album in the best way.

Where to Find the Grain Tool in Lightroom

In Lightroom, you’ll find the Grain sliders under the Effects panel. There are three main sliders:

• Amount — This controls how much grain you’re adding. Start small and build up. You don’t want to overdo it and end up with a crunchy mess

.• Size — This changes how big the individual grain particles are. Smaller sizes feel more subtle and classic, while bigger grains feel more dramatic and vintage.

• Roughness — This one affects how random and organic your grain looks. A higher roughness makes it feel more like traditional film.

Want to make it even easier?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or just want to get that dreamy film-inspired texture instantly, I made a Texture Pack that does all the heavy lifting for you. It’s packed with different grain styles and unique textures that you can layer on to completely transform your edits. It’s honestly one of my favorite ways to add that film magic without spending hours tweaking sliders. You can check it out here and see which vibe feels most you.

Why Grain Matters

Grain is what gives film photos that magic. It adds softness, depth, and that beautifully imperfect feel. Digital photos can sometimes look too clean or sharp, so a little grain can make them feel warmer and more human.

My Favorite Grain Tips

• If you’re going for that classic film look, try adding a little fade in the Tone Curve too. It works so well with grain and gives your photo that soft, washed vibe.

• Play with contrast. Lowering contrast can help your grain blend more naturally.

• Don’t be afraid to experiment. Zoom in and out of your photo while you’re adjusting the grain so you can see how it feels up close and at a distance.

Using Presets for a Film Look

If you want to make your life a bit easier, you can use presets that already include film-style grain. I’ve created a few preset packs that are all about capturing that dreamy, nostalgic feel. When you apply a preset, the grain is already set up for you, so all you have to do is fine-tune it to your taste.

Final Thoughts

Film grain is seriously one of my favorite ways to bring photos to life. It’s like adding a little secret sauce that makes everything feel warmer and more timeless.

A bit of grain can completely transform the vibe. Have fun playing around with it and don’t be afraid to get creative.

If you try this out or use my presets, I’d love to see what you create. T
